Opera Desktop Team
Friday snapshot
Hi All,
First of all I would like to say 'Hello World!' as it's my first post here. I have been working in the Desktop Team as a Mac QA for last one and half years and I'm happy to provide you with today's snapshot. Since the 12.00 RC is incoming fast we would like to give you a bunch of fixes to play with over the weekend.
This snapshot contains fixes for skin like: missing progress bar in the url field, ugly menu bar (Win), missing disclosure triangle (Mac, my favorite!).
You won't miss the crashers, especially the one when opening tabs from links (Win) and Opera freezing while playing some <video> elements (Mac).
There's more in the changelog so enjoy. Have a nice weekend and as usual thanx for any feedback!
PS. For those in Poland: it's Mother's Day tommorow so don't forget to buy some flowers! :)
WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Improvements to Performance, Mail, HTML5 Drag'n'drop and more!
As Opera fans I am sure you are aware that we are always working to make our browser even faster. So perhaps you won't be surprised to hear that this snapshot includes some nice performance improvements in software rendering, when run on a processor with SSSE3 available. No doubt you will be keen to try this for yourself but here is a quick graph comparing the last two snapshots on one of our test machines, when running the canvasbench, Retro DOM and Retro Canvas tests. I'm sure you will agree they show some very decent speed improvements!
Next up we have a range of really nice fixes and improvements for our Mail client. Rather than trying to do them all justice I would encourage you to have a good read of the Mail section in the Changelog below. I'm sure you will find plenty of stuff to make you smile. Though perhaps I should highlight the fix for the POP crash on 64-Bit Windows as we know a few of you have been waiting patiently for this! ;)
We have also done a fair bit of work to improve the Desktop HTML5 Drag and Drop implementation fixing various issues on all three platforms. Again, have a look at the Changelog for more details.
Another highlight for you bug hunters out there is that we now allow you to customize your User-Agent. Whilst we would strongly advise you not to run Opera like this all the time it can be handy to temporarily tweak your User Agent string to match that of another browser. This will let you see if a site is failing to load because we don't fully support it, or simply that the site's developers have intentionally blocked Opera. Enjoy investigating and let us know if you discover anything interesting. :sherlock:
As always, thanks for testing!

Scrolling performance improvements
We are getting close to the first 12.00 Release Candidate and so we need to start wrapping up the worst issues to make a final a possibility. One of the main complaints has been scrolling performance and hence we have a fix that we think should help with this. Please note that it doesn’t fix all possible issues (some more work needs to be done for Facebook for example) but we think many people will have a nice improvement.
Many of the other issues that have been frequently reported are related to Hardware Acceleration. However, for this build what we are really interested in is how Opera performs with Hardware Acceleration disabled, as this will be the default when Opera 12.00 final ships to all our users. So please focus on testing in this mode for now. To get back to this state click on the "Default" button next to Enable Hardware Acceleration and then click "Save". Next click on the "Default" button next to Enable WebGL and then click "Save". After the 12.00 release we will put more focus on the Hardware Acceleration bugs once again.
Thanks for testing!

New Opera 12 snapshot
Here's yet another Opera 12 snapshot with a number of fixes, including several common crashes. It contains Out Of Process Plugin fixes, Hardware Acceleration fixes and Skin fixes.
For Hardware Acceleration fans we have font bugs fixed and new Renderer preference which the user can set to 1 to prefer the DirectX back-end, or 0 to chose OpenGL. Make sure to turn on Hardware Acceleration in opera:config, to check this out (Hardware Acceleration is turned off by default in Opera 12, and the new preference has no effect).

Beta stabilisation and Mac clean-up
In the run up to the Opera 12 final, we have been busy working hard on improving stability, and fixing bugs! Our HTML5 Drag and drop support has major improvements in this snapshot, along with all the other fixes.
On Mac we are endeavoring to become better by making Opera faster, easier and smarter. To achieve this we are with this snapshot adding more native OS X features as well as discontinuing some less relevant features.
Opera was the first major web browser in the Mac App Store, and we are making sure we stay there by introducing support for OS X Sandboxing in Opera 12. Sandboxing is a operating system level security measure that limits an applications access to the system to prevent malicious code from taking over an app and causing damage to the system. OS X Mountain Lion also introduces Gatekeeper, protecting users by only allowing Apple developer signed or sandboxed applications run on the system. Opera will be one of these applications. Look forward to even more of OS X Mountain Lion's new features in the future.
This snapshot also includes a more focused user interface for Mac. Legacy toolbars such as the start bar, navigation bar and the bar that once upon a time was the “main” browser toolbar, are all gone. Furthermore, the introduction of Themes in Opera 12 have made us remove the advanced preferences overriding things like the default icon size and the color tone of the skin. Finally, we have removed some little used features on Mac; IRC chat and BitTorrent. For these we believe there are better alternatives than the current features, and this move allow us to focus our resources on the stuff that really makes the browser better.
All these changes are only applicable for Mac for now.

We have included with this snapshot a sandboxed version of Opera so you can try out what we will be distributing though the Mac App Store in the future. Please give it a try and let us know if you have any problems, and remember to read the extra information and warnings below. If in doubt stick to the standard snapshot :)
Important notes for Mac users: Auto-update is disabled for the sandboxed build. It will not receive newer snapshots or final releases automatically. Your Opera Next profile will be migrated into a sandboxed profile when running a sandboxed build for the first time. Please backup your profile before running the build in case you want to go back to a non-sandbosed build.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, which browser is the fairest of them all?
A long, long time ago, Opera started supporting right-to-left (RTL) and bi-directional (BiDi) content in web pages. You know what they say, Content is King. But a king cannot rule alone, which is why for several months it has been mine and a few of my colleagues' task to bring RTL support in the UI up to speed with web pages. To be honest, there have been times when our work has felt a lot like staring into a mirror, as you can see in the screenshot below.
RTL support in the UI will be receiving some amount of polish before the final release of Wahoo, but we are happy to give you a preview already. If your Windows or *NIX OS language is one of Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew or Urdu, your Opera experience will be RTL automatically. That's because the direction of the UI is now determined by the direction of the UI language set in Opera. Note that you can override the default language selection by going to Preferences -> General and picking a language from the Language drop-down, or making even more fine-grained customizations by clicking the Details… button right next to it.
Happy RTL testing and keep the feedback coming!

Update on hardware acceleration in Opera 12
Here at Opera HQ, we're buckling down for the final push before the beta launch of Opera 12. Right now, Wahoo is getting more complete, with even more fun things to come as we get closer to launch. We have one of those fun things today, in fact. This new snapshot includes the first look at the DirectX backend. Most users on Vista and Windows 7 will by default use this backend instead of the OpenGL backend for performance and stability reasons, but be aware that currently WebGL support using the OpenGL backend is more complete than when using DirectX.
There's also another change in this snapshot. After careful consideration and extensive testing, we've decided to let users of Opera 12 opt-in to WebGL and hardware acceleration.
We're doing this for an important reason. We want to bring the first true hardware accelerated browser to market. This means using the graphics processor to boost rendering speeds not only for the pages themselves, but also the UI of the browser. It means making it an awesome experience for as many Opera desktop users as possible, whether they're on Windows XP, Linux or Lion.
But in some cases, our hardware accelerated speeds do not yet beat our incredibly optimized software backend, Vega. Shipping a feature that could actually be less effective at boosting speed is a big no-no, especially if its a final release that many people will use for day-to-day browsing.
Now, if you're reading this blog post, you're probably in the group of people who will want to turn on WebGL and hardware acceleration. You enable these features by setting both opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableHardwareAcceleration and opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableWebGL to 1, then saving and restarting Opera.
Try it in this release and see how you like it. We think it ensures that Opera 12 will be a great release for everyone, whether you are a browser expert or just discovering Opera for the first time.
As Wahoo is approaching a beta release, we're focusing on stability and fixing regressions. This build includes an important performance and stability fix for plugins on Windows, and should speed up scrolling with plugins significantly.

Opera 11.63 Released for the Mac App Store
A small number of users who downloaded Opera through Apple's Mac App Store, and who have recently upgraded their version of Opera have risked losing their customizations, such as bookmarks, Speed Dials, etc. People who run versions of OS X older than 10.7 or have installed Opera through opera.com have not been impacted by this problem. While this only affects a small subset of our userbase, we are deeply sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.
But now we have fixed the issue. We released Opera 11.63 exclusively for the Mac App Store. People who upgrade to this version will see their customizations restored, just like before they upgraded to Opera 11.62.
The upgrade problem to Opera 11.62 was caused by our build system being configured for the upcoming version Opera 12. For several technical reasons, this caused Opera to create a new profile for the upgrading user. This had the effect of hiding all configurations and customizations. We've now resolved this, and users who upgrade to Opera 11.63 will see everything back the way it was. We have also made arrangements to avoid similar problems in the future.
This special release means there will not be a release of Opera 11.63 for any of the other builds or platforms.
We also recommend using Opera Link, our synchronization service. This helps ensure your configurations will remain intact even in the event of a software or hardware error. ...

Camera support
Hi all,
We'd like to present another snapshot build with one of the new features which will be the part of upcoming release: camera support. With this feature you, as a web page author, will be able to get access to camera directly from JavaScript. You can find out more information about this in our Developer post on HTML5 video & getUserMedia. Additionally, there are several demos you may wish to try: Photo Booth, Polaroid, Color Picker, Explode and Speedo (Note: all require camera access and Speedo also uses geolocation).
Here is a quick run down of the visual changes you might notice. Since we really care about the privacy of our users, we want to make sure that no page can access your camera without your knowledge and explict permission. This is what the permission UI looks like:
In addition to this, you will be informed whenever camera is in use by indicator which is located either in the badge (for current page):
or in the page bar button (for background tabs).
You will also be informed that current page has active camera permission and it can start using camera without additional permission request by inactive (gray) indicator located in the badge:
Finally, you can check and change current permissions state using address bar overlay dialog:
Have fun :) And as always, we're eagerly waiting for your feedback.

Previously there were some complains that Opera fails on searching parts of URL. From now on it should be much easier to find your favorite pages simply by typing words in address field.
For example, lets say you have important friends on Facebook. Assume you have visited https://www.facebook.com/barackobama previously. You would expect to be able to find it by typing "barack" in the addressbar. Starting from this snapshot you will be able to see proper suggestions in the drop down for the address and title of secure pages.
Handling more than one word provided in the address bar was not handled really well previously, as it resulted in matching only page content. This meant that the URL and title was not taken into account when typing multiple words. This has now been improved upon as well, allowing you to better norrow down your searches.
Try visiting example http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/z77-express-virtu-mvp-benchmark,3174.html and than typing "virtu" or "virtu mvp" in addressbar, like so:
In addition, the ordering of items in the drop down has been improved to better promote nicely matching rows when multiple words have been provided.
Providing entries with patterns similar to "5.60 NOK in USD", "foo.bar baz" or "Info.plist" should now execute the default engine searching instead of trying to open the page, rather than resulting in the "Invalid URL" page being displayed. Though we realise that there is still a little bit more work to be done to improve this even further.
Finally the "Show more" button will not be visible now, if there is only one more row to be displayed ;)
Note that if you don't like to see Google suggestions in front of other items in the dropdown, you might turn it off in the config (this is not a new thing).
Known Issues
WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

64-bit builds and new Core with HTML5 Drag and Drop, CSS Animations, updated CSS Transitions, and Out of Process Plugins
This Opera 12 (Wahoo) snapshot has an upgraded Core (Presto) engine with several new features, and for the first time we are able to present you with 64-bit builds for Windows and Mac in snapshots. This has been made possible by, among other things, plugins now running in a separate process.
For more details on Core changes in this build, including demos for the new HTML5 and CSS3 features, head over to the Opera Developer Relations blog.
HTML5
This build introduces initial support for HTML5 Drag and Drop, a technology that allows Web pages to drag elements, selections and microdata from one page onto another, or drag files from the operating system and drop them onto a Web page.
Currently, there are some bugs and limitations with this initial HTML5 Drag and Drop support, such as issues with dragging to and from external applications. We have created a forum thread for HTML5 Drag and Drop where you can view known issues, discuss bugs, and post general feedback.
You may also notice that some existing demos do not seem to work properly. The reason for this is that they sometimes rely on behaviors that do not comply with the specification. As we continue our work on this feature, we will look further into this and try to come up with a solution.
CSS3
We have added experimental support for CSS Animations, which introduce a way to specify animations that can be more intricate than CSS Transitions, and can keep running continuously.
Our CSS Transitions support has also been updated. With CSS Transitions, rendering changes that normally happen instantly can be made to gradually happen over time instead. Among other things we have updated color transitions, enabled transitions on background positions, box shadows and more, and added the ability to transition through one or more abrupt steps.
64-bit builds with Out of Process Plugins
The final big update is the inclusion of out-of-process plugins for the first time in a snapshot (previous OOPP builds were Opera Labs releases). For those unfamiliar with OOPP, the benefits are twofold. Running plugins in a separate process gives Opera a level of protection from plugin instability, which was one of the most common sources of browser crashes and freezes. OOPP should give a major boost to Opera's own stability, and allows the possibility of running 32-bit plugins in a 64-bit browser.
For Mac, we’ll cease to distribute the 32-bit build and only distribute a Universal Binary containing both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. This means all users on systems that supports it will use 64-bit or otherwise fallback to 32-bit from now on.
Whilst our new OOPP implementation is now of snapshot quality it is still work in progress. We have further nice improvements lined up but don't let that stop you reporting any problems that you see.
